Armand Bayardi will lead the discussion:
How do we deal with fear?
A personal experience of fear.
My country drafted me in 1968. I was assigned to the Engineer Corps as a topographic surveyor (a map maker) and was sent to Vietnam in 1969. One of my tasks was to go to MyLai to make a map of the massacre site. MyLai is in Quang Ngai Province - it was a very dangerous and frightening place. Back home people were shocked that American boys could do such horrible things. To us in the field it was quite understandable. When you live in constant fear you become capable of behavior that in "normal life" you would never think possible.
Fear has motivated human behavior since the beginning of recorded history. Sometimes the things to fear are real, but often they are imaginary. Political, military and religious leaders have constantly used fear to incite the masses that follow them. Hitler was certainly to be feared, but are immigrants? How about gays, lesbians, space aliens, liberals, academics, Asians, AI - the list can be endless.
The consequences of living in fear can be so dreadful that we must find a way to educate ourselves and our fellows between what is real and what is imagined.
The question is how?
This will be a hybrid event - either in-person in the Social Hall, or on Zoom to discuss this topic.
